  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: Makes approximately 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup fine cornmeal
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 1 large egg

  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Preheat oil to 375°F (190°C) in a deep fryer or large pot.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, mix buttermilk and egg until smooth, then combine with the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just mixed.
  3. Insert wooden skewers halfway into each hot dog.
  4. Dip each hot dog into the batter until fully coated, letting excess batter drip off.
  5. Carefully place in hot oil, frying for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown on all sides.
  6. Remove and drain on paper towels; serve hot with dipping sauces.
