  • 2 cups heavy cream (for whipping)
  • 1 cup sour cherries (pitted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the eggs until frothy; then stir in the milk and melted butter.
  4. Gradually combine the wet mixture with the dry ingredients until no lumps remain.
  5. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in their pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  7. Whip heavy cream until stiff peaks form; add powdered sugar and vanilla extract to taste.
  8. Assemble by layering one cake with whipped cream and cherries, topping with the second cake layer, remaining whipped cream, and chocolate shavings.
