- 1 tbsp sugar
- Toppings: sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning (optional)
Instructions
- 1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, mix warm water with sugar and sprinkle yeast on top. Let it sit until frothy (5-10 minutes).
- 2. Mix the dough: Combine flour and salt in a large bowl, then gradually stir in the yeast mixture until a shaggy dough forms.
- 3. Knead the dough: Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4. Let it rise: Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour until doubled.
- 5. Shape the bagels: Punch down the dough, divide it into equal pieces, roll into balls, then poke through to shape into bagels.
- 6. Boil & bake: Preheat oven to 425°F. Boil salted water; boil each bagel for 30 seconds per side, then transfer to a baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
