Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups arepa flour (masarepa)
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ cup crumbled cheese (optional)
- Fillings: shredded beef or chicken (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine arepa flour, salt, and warm water. Mix until you achieve a smooth dough.
- Divide the dough into equal portions (about the size of your palm) and shape them into discs roughly ½ inch thick.
- Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it with oil. Cook each arepa for about 5 minutes per side until golden brown.
- If desired, slice cooked arepas open and stuff with fillings like cheese or meat while still warm.
- For extra crispiness, place stuffed arepas in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes before serving.
