- 1 lb fresh cod or haddock fillets
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 cup cold beer or sparkling water
- 4 medium russet potatoes
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- Tartar sauce for serving
Instructions
- Rinse and pat dry the fillets, then cut into serving-sized pieces.
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Gradually whisk in beer or sparkling water until smooth.
- Peel and cut potatoes into wedges; soak in water for 30 minutes.
- In a deep pan, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Dip fish in batter and fry until golden brown (about 4-5 minutes). Remove with a slotted spoon onto paper towels.
- Plate the fish and chips hot with tartar sauce on the side.
