- 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 4 cups stale sourdough bread, cubed
- 2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Add broth and seasoning: Stir in beef broth, thyme, salt, and pepper; simmer for 5-10 minutes until slightly reduced.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- Layer ingredients: Place half of the sourdough bread in the dish, followed by half of the onion mixture and half of the Gruyère cheese. Repeat layers.
- Bake: Top with remaining cheese and bake for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
