- 4 large sweet yellow onions (about 1.5 lbs), thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups grated Gruyère cheese (divided)
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized and translucent (about 20 minutes), stirring frequently.
- Pour in beef broth and heavy cream; stir well and simmer for another 10 minutes.
- Mix in half of the grated Gruyère until melted, creating a creamy filling.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
- Pour the onion mixture into the dish, top with remaining Gruyère and panko breadcrumbs, then drizzle with melted butter if desired.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
